Back from a Long Break

Hey everyone I know it’s been a while but I finally got back from the longest break I’ve ever had that wasn’t a summer break, six weeks. I did a bunch of fun stuff since the break began. We got off from school the 12th and that was my last final exam for the first semester. That’s when I got to go back to sleep in my own bed and relax and hang with the family and friends for the break. I got home and was finally reunited with my love of my life and the only thing I miss at school… my car. ☺ It was the greatest feeling I’ve had in a long time. But it wasn’t long before we got to Christmas and I got some parts I wanted for my car. The family came over and I got to see the family members I don’t usually get to see during the year. We had a nice dinner and I couldn’t have asked for more delicious food. That was great not to say the school food is bad because it’s actually really quite delicious but there’s nothing like a home cooked meal.

The day after Christmas my family got to go to Miami for a week because my dad had gotten some free airfare. The weather was nothing short of B-E-A-U-TIFUL!!! 75 to 80 the entire week, we just missed the cold front that had come just before we got there. While that was nice it was short lived and the snow that was on the ground when we got back and guess who had to shovel it… yep me. But I drove a lot and hung out with friends fixed up some of my friend’s cars and just had a good time like back in high school. But now I’m finally back to the U.

It was very restful but I’m glad to be back. I get back and there’s nothing like Scranton snow as soon as we get back. I actually came back on Saturday and that night as I finished moving in the power just went out and I found out that about half of Scranton went out at the same time but it was a fun night regardless. I missed a lot of my friends from school and I’m glad I got to see most of them already. Its really nice to have friends at home and friends at school because now I know I’ll have a good time no matter where I go. I’m also glad I found a good group of friends who all really want to help each other do better this semester. I just got a taste of my new classes and I’ll let you know how they go. I’m super pumped to do well this semester and hopefully ski trip? I don’t know we’ll find out soon.

It all comes down to this...

Sorry for not writing for such a while I’ve been so busy with my schoolwork, registering for classes in the spring, thanksgiving and now preparing for finals. Time is really just flying by me.

I can’t believe that finals are next week. I seriously feel like I have only been here a little while. It definitely doesn’t feel like 3 months. Dead week, this week, is the week where we have no tests but still have classes and it’s getting down to the wire. I cannot believe it, now everything that I have learned since school started I’m going to be tested on and it all comes down to this. The pressure is certainly relentless but I just have to keep studying and I can get through this. At first glance this seems overwhelming but its not that bad, I just tell myself to calm down and take it one day at a time and study one test at a time and there are nine more days and I can do it.

I can honestly say that I didn’t believe people when they told me how fast college goes by but they were so right. Hanging out with friends, deadlines for papers and tests and hours of studying are taken a week at a time so I guess they all add up to over 3 months now. I didn’t even realize that finals were just around the corner until so recently because I can’t believe that I’ve been here for over 3 months. I don’t know how or why it went so quickly but I truly don’t know where the last 3 months have gone. I can’t say that enough.

I have 9 days, 6 finals and a whole lot of studying in between. Let’s hope this works out for the best. I’ll certainly let you know how all this goes next week.

Almost the End of the Semester

Last night I was able to witness my first play on campus. It was called The Company. One of my friends was in it, her name is Shannon and she was great. The whole play was great it was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. They did a great job putting it all together.

But enough of that, last week was one busy week. Tests and deadlines are coming up and some ended this past week. I handed in my final paper for Theology which was so stressful and exciting all at the same time. I took a bunch of quizzes and which are designed to help us get ready for the tests coming up.

This week is going to be a hectic one to say the least. This weekend I have a to prepare a speech for public speaking, do my Chemistry lab due Tuesday and learn to register for classes before it’s too late. I can’t believe it I’m already scheduling for next semester. I can’t believe how fast this semester has gone by. After this week I have two days of school and when I come back from Thanksgiving break I have a week of classes and finals that’s it already wowwww.

One of the things that has been keeping me busy is the gym. The last thing that I wanted was to gain the freshman 15 while being here. It’s so easy to do though because the food here is just that good. But I have been making it a regular thing to go the gym and lift weights with my best friend from school here Jon. I told Jon that I wanted to get into better shape and he understood and wanted to help me. Jon has played football for the past four years and spend many hours in the weight room so now he is sharing some of his knowledge with me. Both being exercise science majors this daily activity is fun and interesting. We have a good time and get a first hand experience for how the muscles in the body function.

Lets hope I can keep this up to keep the weight off. It seems to be working for now but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Till next time,

Dom

THEEEEEEE YANKEEESSSSS WINNNNNN!!!!!!!

Last night was one of the most exciting, invigorating, and just fun nights of my life. Well just incase you have been living under a rock over the past few weeks the Yankees and the Phillies have been slugging it out to see who will come out on top and become the World Champion. To make a long story short, the Yankees won in game 6. Coming from New York I am a Yankees fan so it was great to have my team win especially since everyone here in Pennsylvania was rooting for the Phillies.

During the weeks of the playoffs we all exchanged our feelings of who we thought would win and who was playing and what not, but those games were exciting but last night when they won was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. They won with the out at first and right then and there we all ran outside. Everyone was chanting and screaming because we were all excited that our team was victorious and beat the team who won last season. I could have never imagined the amount of people outside. At least 200 people were outside cheering for the Yanks. We ran around like a bunch of idiots around campus chanting “LETS GO YANKEES!!!!!”

So that was my night last night I didn’t get to bed until almost 2am. This is just one of those things I just will never forget. Great experiences in Scranton they continue to get better and better.

Hopefully next week can come close to as fun as that. I doubt it though, but I can hope right?

Snow?

I never got to say anything last week because everything was so hectic but now that I have a minute… IT SNOWED IN THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER HERE!!!!!! WHATTTT!!!! I still don’t believe it. It wasn’t a lot but it snowed, thanks to global warming that’s my bet hahaha. I just thought that would be something fun to share.

Well as I said last week my friends Brandon and Nick came up for the weekend. Needless to say it was great, everything except four guys in one bedroom lol. They slept on the floor o well but we had a great weekend. We went out and they got to meet some of my friends and we hung out I showed them around Scranton. My friend Brandon drove us around to Wal-Mart and Gander Mountain too that was fun. But, best of all my friend’s from school Jon and Austin came with the three of us to the Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant which is really a bar and wing place home to the hottest wings everrrrrrr!!!!! My friends Jon and Nick tried them and they almost died eating them. They did though they ate all of them and got their name on the wall. I wish I had a picture to share with you guys of their faces eating the wings because it was priceless. But sadly I don’t but I have this one I hope it’s good anyway.

That’s Nick on the left and Jon on the right. Sorry for the bad quality I took it with my cell phone.

After that we went on adventure that we will never go on again. That was the trip to Austin’s house. He said it was only a half hour away but it took at least an hour to get there. But the best part was that on the way up there we passed some strange looking houses and creepy barns and we felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. My friend Brandon could have swore that it was something out of a movie like the Hills Have Eyes, or SAW but we finally got there. Stayed for a little and Brandon bolted out in his car with Nick and I when he caught a glimpse of the cemetery on the way out. It was hilarious and scary all at the same time Brandon was scared out of his mind and Nick and I were but we were making fun of him and taunting him the whole time it was great. We made it back to campus safely thank God but that is certainly not a trip I will never go on again.

On another note this weekend I start my service learning or as many of you will know it as volunteer work. My best friend here at school Jon told me about this great place to volunteer at it’s called Timmy’s Town Center, which is a children’s museum. The lady who started its son died of cancer and when he was on his medication she used to take him to the children’s museum. This was a great way for him to take his mind off the illness. She decided to dedicate one to him for other kids. Jon and I are going to volunteer our time to help build and fix the center before it opens in a few weeks.

Finally next week I have two tests: Monday Chemistry and Wednesday Bio. It should be manageable. Wish me luck til next time.

Maria’s Sweet 16

I’m sorry I haven’t written such a long time, there has just been so much going on. Last week was my practical which I think I did great on, that’s probably because I studied until I couldn’t see anymore but it worked ☺ so I won’t complain. But this past weekend I went home for the weekend because well it was my younger sister’s Sweet 16 birthday party. Here are a few photos.

Fall Break

Wow that was the fastest four-day weekend I have ever experienced. My best friend from home, Brandon, drove the whole way here to get me then drove us the whole way back to Somers, the whole 4 hours. Then I took a shower and got right in my car, which was quite possibly the best feeling ever, picked him up and we headed off too Quinnipiac University to see our friend Nick. We hung out Friday with our friend Nick and a girl we knew from home Dana. We toured the campus and meet Nick’s friends and had one of the funniest nights ever.

I woke up the next morning said goodbye to my good friends Nick and Dana then Brandon and I were off back home. I dropped Brandon off and spent the afternoon with my grandparents who were glad to see me. I spent the rest of the night with my family and I almost forgot I went over my friend Steph’s house to watch Zoolander for the first time ever. That was a funny movie and everyone should definitely see it. I woke up for church Sunday and then proceeded to drive to Eastern Connecticut University to see my friend, who had been begging me to come see her, Kailyn. I realized as I was driving there that I had gone all the way home to be right back near Quinnipiac just a bit farther. So I wasted a lot of miles and time but well it was worth it. I was really glad to see my friend Kai and it was a lot of fun. We went to Ruby Tuesday’s and we watched the good old Yanks win WOOOOOOOOO YAY!!!

Monday I finally got to rest and hang out with my dad who took the day off so we could hang out. That was really nice and relaxing.

Now I am finally back to school and the work starts yet again. I finished my tests last week thank God, but.. well they didn’t go as well as I planned. I spoke with my teachers and we are trying to work out some extra credit work I can do as well as going over the test to make sure I understand the information for the final. It all seemed to work out. :)

Now comes this week: Chem lab due Tuesday and another nice Bio lab practical next Friday. The work doesn’t end but I’d rather be busy than bored.

Its just another week to tackle. And I have something to look forward to this weekend, my friends Brandon and Nick are coming up to stay for the weekend. Its going to be so much fun I can’t wait.

I’ll let you know how it goes next week.

P.S. Happy Birthday Maria!!! It's my sister's 16th b-day today.

Going Home After the Craziness is Over

I cannot even being to believe that I have am having midterms already isn’t like just October? Wow college is flying by, it is unreal. This week has been packed with studying.

But, before I forget the connections retreat was AWESOME!!! I had such a great time and I meet a bunch of new people. Some of the people I met I would have never seen because we don’t have any of the same classes together or anything, but now we know each other and we can hang out all the time. The retreat wasn’t just a way to meet new people but it was a way to connect with yourself and find out what you really want out of your college career and life for that matter. The retreat helped me do both of those things and even got me to be a little closer to God all at the same time. I would recommend this to any incoming freshman especially if you have trouble meeting new people. I am so glad I went.

But as I was saying before, it’s crunch time now and it’s down to the wire and I have so much to do. I have a quiz today in bio lab and three tests tomorrow and one of which is a midterm. I have a Biology test, a Chemistry test and a Theology midterm. Wow!!! But the good part about it all is after I’m done studying all day I get to go home for a nice four day break.

I have such a great weekend planned. I am finishing my tests around 11:30am and I them I’ll get picked up at 2:30ish from my friend from home Brandon. We are going to go all the way home to go out again hahaha, to see our friend Nick at his college. We’ll stay the night and I’ll be home for most rest of Saturday and then out again to another friend’s school and home for the next two days coming back to the U Tuesday sometime in the afternoon. I hope I get some time to sleep in there.

Wish me luck on my tests.

A Month and a Half Really?

It has been over a month since I’ve started school here at the U and I cannot believe it. I would have never have realized that if one of my friends didn’t tell me the other day. It’s just not something I think about anymore. I keep doing my work and time really flies when you are busy and having fun.

Last weekend was great. I was truly happy to spend time with my family because come to think of it I don’t see them that often, even though they can be annoying. Its just relieving to see them once and a while and to be around that familiarity that I’ve had the past 18 years of my life. Parent’s weekend was eventful. We went to the Steamtown Mall and got some posters for my room, we went out to dinner at the bar in the Radisson Hotel and yea I got to stay in the hotel for a night, which was really nice.

This week is going well, I just looked at my calendar and realized that we only have two weeks of school and then a four-day weekend. But of course before then will be hectic. I have to make a speech in my public speaking class on Monday, go figure right haha and I am so lucky that I have two tests Chemistry and Biology next Friday. Oh well I guess I will be busy studying this week.

However, studying aside this weekend, Friday into Saturday, I’m going on my first retreat ever! It’s called Connections. “Connections is a retreat created for first year students to help with the transition to college life.” That’s what the pamphlet said and I couldn’t put it better myself, but from what I’ve heard everyone who’s gone has had a blast! They told me that they either met their best friend their or their girlfriend or boyfriend there and it was so much fun on top of that. So I guess you could say it came highly recommended. I cannot wait to go. I can’t wait to see who I’ll met there or better yet find out what we are going to do.

O So Busy

I cannot believe how much work has been thrown my way since the last time I blogged. I am so busy but it’s a good kind of busy. I had a chemistry test on Monday and I had a biology lab quiz today, I had a chemistry lab due on Tuesday, my 6-page paper for theology is due tomorrow and my BIG biology lab practical is tomorrow. You see in bio lab we don’t get tests we take a practical. They are like moving tests; you go from station to station and answer questions about the lab setups the teacher has put out. I have been studying like it’s my job, well actually it is my job haha, for the past week. It’s actually not bad it’s motivating and keeps my blood pumping going from task to task and keeping myself on the balls of my feet. I have studied and I feel confident that I can go into the test knowing I’m prepared. And I bet people have told you this many times before don’t wait until the last minute to study. Well from my perspective as a student I planned out my time well and studied little by little and now look I’m ready for the test I have tomorrow no wait practical sorry I’m still getting used to it. I’m looking at some of my friends who didn’t really plan out what they had to do and they are really getting nervous and struggling to get things done. It’s not any harder than you make it for yourself. Plan ahead and schedule your time wisely and everything will go to plan. Trust me its simple just stick to your schedule. But don’t think for a second I was always like this though. In high school I would wait until the last possible time to get a project done or study for a test. I would do ok, not great but well enough. But when I got here I wanted to make sure I could do everything to the best of my ability and so planning out has really helped me. I have to give my credit to the CTLE writing center because they have helped me out so much, especially with my giant paper that I have to hand in tomorrow. CTLE is a tutoring center and well lets just say if I could get frequent walk in miles there I would because I am in there all the time and they are so unbelievably helpful.

Well after tomorrow at 4 o’clock I will finally get to breathe a sigh of relief because all of my work will be done and it will finally be the weekend, which this weekend happens to be parents weekend yayyy!!!! I get to see my family who are all going to come out and visit me for the weekend. We are going to go out to eat and get some more Gatorade for my room, because well to be honest I couldn’t live without it. It is going to be really nice to see them even though I am glad to be out of the house. I just can’t wait I am so excited to be through with everything so my weekend can just start. Well I guess I’ll write about how amazing my weekend was next week.
