'Tis the Season to be ...busy?

I love the holiday season! We already have a tree in our apartment that you can see from the street! The lights are up and soon, with the aid of brick-patterned paper, we will have a faux-fireplace to hang our stockings by.
But with the coming of Christmas it means the end of the semester and the journey up my mountainous pile of work. Right now its my 5th straight day in the library and I'm about to move my bed in. Tomorrow I have to submit, with my International Business group, our 30 page term paper on manufacturing bikes internationally from our make- believe bike corporation, Better Bikes, Inc. The country I have to analyze is India and I've been studying the culture so long now I can practically speak Hindi. This is the make-or -break it project for this class, but no pressure. Thursday is my last group presentation for my Sustainable Marketing class, which is kind of bittersweet. That was a really interesting class and I learned a lot.
My internship at Diversified is going well. I have almost mastered Salesforce.com and I am a pro at sending Fedex packages. But I really am learning there.
I got a new mentor today! I'm very excited. Her name is Jen Honick and she is the Director of Grants and Finance for Lackawanna County. She went to the University and knows Dr. Cann. I feel like this will be a great experience and that there is so much I can learn from her.
Thursday we also decided to have an apartment Thanksgiving dinner! Wish me luck, because I have no idea how to cook a turkey and I'm pretty sure it will take about 5 hours. This is the only way we can justify having a Christmas party on Saturday.
On Sunday was the Mass honoring the Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador. It was a really beautiful mass and had a video made by students about what happened. It really inspired me to want to do my other tutorial on Liberation Theology, Latin America, and Archbishop Romero.
Toodles for some Noodles ( corny but accurate.. i need Ramen.)

Cubicles and Costumes

I had to wait one more day to write to you guys because I wanted to include some exciting news. Yesterday was my first day at my internship at Diversified Information Technologies. They do information systems management, kind of like IBM. They mainly work with medical, insurance, government fields and universities. Well I got my official ID badge and filled out copious copies of paperwork. Then I went to sit in on a meeting with the lady who will be in charge of me, Christine. Little did I know, I'd be sitting there with the CEO and President, Scott Byers, but also with VP of Sales and Marketing, Malcolm DeMayo, and many other important people. After that I got my own little cubicle with computer, email, phone, and voicemail. I felt very official while I figured out how to navigate their email system. Friday I go back and really get to work.
Last night I took a break from studying (the count for this week: 2 quizzes, 1 Test, 2 papers) to go to Midnight Madness. It was great to see how excited the student body was for this pep rally extravaganza. The dance team was amazing as always and the basketball teams looked pumped and ready for a new season. I had to cut out early because lots more studying awaited me last night.
Well it's that time again: the challenge to find/make a cute costume that is under $50 and keeps me from freezing on Halloween. I'm still unsure of what to be but I've heard some cute ideas. People are being everything from the Spice Girls to dressing up in gift wrap as presents. I need to really buckle down on this one as I only have a couple days left!
Sunday was a Open House, and so many high school students and their parents filled the Long Center. I sat at the Honors Table and felt so old! Wasn't I a prospective student only yesterday? No, wait, that was 3 years ago! Time flies here in Scranton. Nothing is really more scary than that. On that note...
Stay Spooky Scranton!

Bloggers Block

I really am not sure what to write about... I guess you can call it bloggers' block. There is one thing I am really excited about, though. I was sitting in Sustainable Marketing and we were learning the true cost of products and how if companies added the cost to the environment and society from the production of their product onto the prices, sustainable products will no longer seem expensive. We watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n39T35Ia_4. I really, really recommend you watch it. It is unbelievably eye opening. It really shows how we need to pay attention to where our clothes come from.
This really got me thinking about next year's tutorial for the Honors program. I want to do something like Marketing and Social Justice in the Garment Industry. That way I can focus on how to market the benefits of fair trade products and what that means exactly. Dr. Cann, my Sustainable Marketing professor, was really interested in that idea. She said she knows a woman who is trying to help women in Nicaragua earn fair wages to make clothes that she sells here. We want to help her start a website and gain more attention for the work she does. I think people would want to help these women.
I just had my advising appointment today and it looks like next semester I will only have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at night. This excludes my Honors courses. I have one junior honors seminar course, but I do not know when it is held. This is in addition to two tutorials which meet once a week for an hour. Hopefully this kind of schedule works out. Well, that's all that's happening for now!

Back from Break

I'm home from Jersey, but I almost didn't make it! Halfway back to Scranton on 33N Diana and I got a flat. All I can say is thank God for AAA. I was back on the road in 30 minutes!
Break was great. I got to visit friends, I went pumpkin picking, and I went to Eastern State Penitentiary Haunted House in Philly. The haunted house was really fun and spooky but the lines were unbelievable. If you check it out expect to be standing in lines for at least 2 hours. Aside from the lines, though, the actual prison was really scary. It's been on Ghost Hunters and is really believed to be haunted.
Good news! I got the internship with Diversified Information Technologies! I start next Monday and I'm a little nervous. Hopefully all goes well.
Well tonight was the last Building Your Art Business workshop. It really was a success. Everyone said they enjoyed the series and wants to see it continue. The SBDC wants to try but it's hard with the major budget decrease that was just announced. Anyway, this last meeting was interesting because we had a panel of people who had a lot of knowledge to share: Paul DeLuca of DeLuca Frigoletto advertising, Cristin Powers of Green Being (an awesome store in downtown Scranton that specializes in handmade, local, and eco-friendly wares. Check it out!), and Mark the drummer of the local band The Wannabes. After, everyone shared their work. I cannot begin to describe how talented everyone was. From a handmade dress of organic cotton to an incredible pen and ink drawing of the Haitian voodoo Goddess of wind, everyone had really unique work to show.
My Fortune: Lots of work ahead in the next coming weeks.
'Gotta go!

One Girl's Quest for an Internship...

Well I've joined the search of all college juniors: the search for an internship!
Back track to Thursday and the KSOM Expo: it was a really great experience. Over a hundred students in black suits and white button down shirts invaded the Denaples Ballroom to talk to recruiters from companies like UBS and Prudential to Johnson & Johnson and Coca Cola. I talked to a lot of companies and got some great feedback on my resume and on opportunities. I even had an interview with UBS! It was incredibly nerve racking. They have one of the most competitive internship programs. They sat me down and said, "You need to make yourself stand out among 1000 other well qualified applicants. You have 5 minutes. Go." I hope I did well. I also went to the dinner after at the Hilton. The speaker Patricia Clifford of Dun & Bradstreet was really great.
After I left the interview for UBS, I had a missed call from Diversified Information Technologies in Scranton. They wanted me to come in for an interview for an internship. I guess when one door closes another opens. I have that tomorrow and I'll let you know how that goes.
Friday my apartment went to Dracula's Forest Haunted Hayride in Clarks Summit. It was really fun, but I don't know what was scarier- the drive there in the rain on winding mountain roads or the hayride itself. It's definitely something to go check out before it's over!
Sunday a bunch of my friends and I went to go see Avenue Q at the Scranton Cultural Center. I have never been in that building and I was blown away by how beautiful it is. It's an old Masonic temple and it is really awesome. They play was hilarious. It was a lot of college humor and the acting with puppets was great. It makes you wonder how they do it.
I had to present a small part of the Build Your Art Business Workshop today. I was pretty nervous. I hope everyone got something out of it. I talked about blogging and facebook, two things I know well.
This weekend is Fall Break so I get to go home. It'll be nice to relax a little even though I have a ton of work waiting for me when I get back.
'Gotta go study! Finance quiz!

Long Day

I just got back from week #2 of the SBDC's Build Your Art Business workshop, which went very well. We had a lawyer/sculptor come in to talk about the legal issues that can happen with art businesses. Then Donna Simpson, another SBDC employee and my former Public Speaking professor, gave a great talk on managing money, budgets, and taxes. The group is great and I can't believe it's half over!
I had two tests today and one tomorrow in OIM so I am drained right now. International Business was the one I was dreading the most and it turned out to be better than I expected, but my Psyc class, Drugs and Human Behavior, test was awful! It was very nit-picky from the book. : (
On a happier note the Dave concert on Wednesday was awesome! Saturday I went home for my grandma's birthday. It was great to see the family, although my Aunt Deanna could not make it. I taught my little cousins some silly yoga moves that they loved. On Sunday my friend Dominic took me to a NASCAR race at Dover Downs in Delaware (say that 3 times fast!). Well let me tell you it was an experience. I am not a NASCAR fan, but I went along to see what it all was about. It's hard to describe but it's very loud and can be exciting, like when the Home Depot Car crashed and rolled 7 times! The weather turned out to be really nice and it was a good time, although it is probably a onetime only thing for me. (My sustainable marketing teacher would probably not enjoy it - least eco friendly sport/event ever!)
Sorry this is a short one! More next week on the KSOM expo and a few other fun events!

Meetings, Mentors, and Matthews, Dave Matthews

Ok so I stretched a little to make the title sound nice, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for alliteration.
Meetings! Well I attend the year's first Business Club meeting the other night and I really kicked myself for not being more involved with that club earlier. So I am currently applying to be a representative for the Business Club. This club hosts an amazing Business Recruiting expo every fall and spring, and next Thursday is the first one! I'm really nervous because I've always wanted to go but always felt not serious enough for it. This year I'm diving in head first. I am attending the expo during the day, while sporting my best business attire and handing out my new and improved resume (thanks to Frank Gilmartin at Career Services), and at night I am going to the dinner at the Hilton. Hopefully this will lead to an internship or (fingers crossed!) future employment. These days jobs are so hard to come by that when someone asks me my career goals I say "any job that will pay off my student loans." Anyway, I'll fill you in next week about how the expo goes.
The other major meeting was that last night was the first session of the SBDC's Building Your Art Business workshop that I have been putting together with Lisa Hall as my Honors tutorial class. It went really well and our group of 15 is great. They seemed to love the presentation and all the information they received. I only had to do an icebreaker with the group so I wasn't so nervous. In a couple weeks I'm actually presenting something so I'll save the stage fright until then.
I received my mentor, Mary Kay Warner last Thursday. She has a really interesting job that deals with eco-friendly record keeping and digitalizing companies' systems to eliminate unnecessary paper work. It really ties into my Sustainable Marketing class.
And now for some fun stuff! You read correctly, I'm going to the Dave concert tonight. The weather is gorgeous so it should be a great time. My friend Emily and I are going together, but so many people from "the U" are going, too. I'm sure I'll run into some familiar faces!
'Gotta run!

Still Settling in...

Can you believe I'm still getting settled into this school year? I think it's because I am working a lot now and it has been brutal down in the Moses Taylor ER. We are very short staffed. I also have taken this semester off from Rugby. I miss it a lot especially playing on Saturday. Fortunately though we still have a strong team and won against Muhlenberg last Saturday.
Classes have been going well, only a few quizzes and projects so far. We had to come up with a sustainable product and present it to the class for my Sustainable Marketing class. It was pretty interesting trying to find a product that doesn't already exist. There is really so much out there now that is sustainable or at least more eco-friendly than its normal version. I got to work with a girl from the Netherlands. She had a lot of ideas and it was fun talking about what she thought was different here in comparison to her home. It's kind of embarrassing to be an American in a class about sustainability with people from Europe. We are so behind here.
I find out who my business mentor is today! I'm so excited to talk to them. I've been sprucing up my resume with Career Services so that it looks more professional when they see it. I hope I gain as much as I can from this experience.
Habitat for Humanity also started up with our first meeting. I can't wait for my board-memberly duties to kick in. I love this club and really want to do more. We have seriously grown in numbers and our county affiliate has resurrected itself so we will be doing a lot more locally this year. We will be breaking ground soon for our first Scranton Habitat Home!
It's off to class for me!

Junior Year

Just like your favorite show on HBO, I'm back for the fall! Only this year I'm living off campus in one of the nicest apartments. Be jealous. I'm just kidding, you don't have to be jealous. It's just that most people are when they see them. I mean having closets bigger than most peoples' rooms is really no big deal.
Anyway, I have so much to tell you so get comfy. If you've been following you know I went to Guyana this June with the International Service Program. "Amazing" is such a cliche way to describe it, so is "life changing" and "unbelievable," but those are the only words I can really tell you. I met people I will never forget and experienced things that have become a part of me. This is so vague, and I apologize so I am going to share something with you to help you get an idea of my trip.
This is part of an entry from my journal I kept on that trip:
6/8/09 Georgetown, Guyana
Today was very interesting. We went back to Mercy hospital in the morning to continue painting. Elise, Megan, and I painted the railings outside the second floor women's ward, There was a woman on the other side of the window (we were on the porch) that was moaning in pain. It hurt to be so helpless and not be able to take away her pain. It turns out she was a [Mercy] Sister. After the hospital we had lunch and changed clothes to go to Mahaica Hospital, which was an hour away....On the way we picked up Sr. Kenneth at the convent. She was our guide for the trip. As we drove there Sr. told us about Mahaica. A better term for it would be an "assisted living" community, since there are only 8 permanent residents. The place is specifically for people with Hanson's disease (i.e. leprosy). At first I was nervous that I would not be able to handle it, but I felt better as I learned more about the disease from Sr. Kenneth. The people who are there choose to live there because they are outcasts to society. They are no longer contagious, but there is a definite stigma with the disease. This is caused by ignorance. Here is a little about one of the people that live there:
Mr. Fullington: an old blind man, who loves to sit and listen to the radio and sings beautifully. He sang "Ol' Danny Boy" which was so hauntingly beautiful, I cried. We all did. I don't think I can ever listen to that song again and not tear up and think of Mr. Fullington.
Take what you want from my words.
Classes started last Monday. Here is a breakdown of my course load: Yoga: truly helps me relax but shows me just how inflexible I am. Finance: money (yawn.) OIM: accounting meets computer literacy. Sustainable Marketing: inspiring! Dr. Cann is so passionate about what she teaches you really can't help but get excited. International Business: will be tough, but interesting. Psyc: Drugs and the Human Behavior: pretty cool so far, and the Scranton Chief of Police is in the class with us. The most interesting class so far is definitely my Honors Tutorial with Lisa Hall who works in the Small Business Development Center. We are putting together workshops together for local artists. Usually they work with small business owners and entrepreneurs, but these are going to be artist specific. Lisa is great because she includes me in every step along the way. This is as hands-on and real world based as it gets.
Well aside from class Moses Taylor has been taking up most of my time. I am working 4 days a week from either 3pm to 11:30 or 5 pm to 1:30 am. This is just until the new hires are trained, thankfully, because it is a lot of work right now.
Ok, I need to get out of the library before I become part of the furniture.
Good to see you again, Scranton!

End of the Year blues...

I'm writing this from collegiate hall. It's 9 o'clock pm. I will not be leaving this seat for at least 5 hours, except to use the bathroom. That's right ladies and gents; it's the week before dead week. That's 2 weeks before finals. Next week is called dead week supposedly because teachers are supposed to take it easy on us students so we can start studying for finals, but it's dead week for me because I may not live to see it. Let's just recap my list of assignments for this week, shall we? MGT- 5 pg book review, STAT project, MKT- presentation, SCI- blog, debate, and journal, ACC- a chapter's worth of questions and a test (that's tomorrow). Plus an ISP scholarship application, and two 8 1/2 hour shifts at Moses Taylor. I'm fearing the day that caffeine will no longer affect me because right now it's my only source of energy. Funny thing is after tomorrow I'm home free with nothing due until finals. :)
Well after all my whining I have some good news: (1) I'm now on the Board for Habitat for Humanity, (2) our final prep meeting for ISP is Sunday which means the trip is around the corner, and (3) well there's two weeks left in school and that is cause for celebration in itself.
Fun fact: Habitat for Humanity won the Club of the Year award! Congrats to Matt Tirella and all the Habitat kids who put in so much work!
Even though I'm stoked for summer, I am really sad about leaving. This is my last two weeks living in a dorm! My roommate and I are living with 3 of our close friends in a really nice apartment off campus, but I'm going to miss living with my quadmates Heather and Grace. I know they will miss me popping in their room all the time to bug them, though! The best part about living in a dorm is that someone is always around to hang out, go for a run, or make a quick stop for Dunkin Donuts ($1 Iced Coffee!!!!) or Dominos (mmm...pasta bowls). I will honestly miss it.
Ok well I still have to study for Accounting!!!!

Break out your sunglasses!

Yes, it is my favorite time of year at Scranton. We came back from Easter break and the week started out with some dreary weather. But that is old news now. Sunbathers, flip flops, and wiffleball have taken over the campus. The only down side is with all this beautiful weather, who wants to study?
Here is some exciting news: Women's Rugby is undefeated!! Yes we are 3-0 and we only have our prom dress tournament at Lehigh this Saturday. I don't know if you guys remember what that tournament is all about but the concept is we get old prom dresses and wear them while playing. Picture this: girls tackling each other in a flurry of tulle, sequins, and mud. The fans can actually hear the dresses tearing from the sidelines. It's hilarious to watch and tons of fun.
Tomorrow I go to get my travel vaccines!! Thankfully I just need one: typhoid, but I'm still nervous for it. At least this means I am one step closer to going to Guyana!
So my tutorial for next year is all set and it could not be better. It's based in the Small Business Development Center. I get to help set up workshops for artists who are looking for some guidance in the business aspect of what they do. Since I love art and I am a Management major I really think this is heaven - sent. Most of you don't know I came to college with the original plan of wanted to run my own art gallery, so the integration of business and art has always been my passion.
Ok well it's off to bed for me!
Goodnight Scranton!

Have you ever turned a treadmill on and then tried to jump on it running (Don't try it!) Well that's what I felt like coming back from Spring Break.
West Virginia was amazing! Habitat for Humanity is always an incredible experience. WV is definitely not a place I would vacation, though. Whether we were shoveling gravel (fun fact: we moved 200,000 lbs of gravel... with shovels!) or putting down a new floor for a great grandfather of about 20 great grand kids, we all came back feeling like no time was wasted on our spring break. And as always, lasting friendships were formed.
Now ISP fundraise-a-thon is on. It feels never ending and it is difficult, but I feel like when the plane is landing in Georgetown, Guyana I won't mind a second of it.
I did get to see my family this weekend they came up for ISP Family Day. It was a great day and everyone walked away with questions answered and an all around better feeling about the trip. My Mom was a little skeptical of things like safety, housing, and food but she told me she feels a lot better now knowing I will be in good hands. Coming from my Mom, the worrier, that means a lot.
Saturday was also our first rugby game of the season!! We played Albright at home. The first time we played them last year they really beat us. This year the tables turned and we won! It must be from all the fresh and fun rookies that joined. They have really brought new life into the program!
Can you believe Friday is registration already?? The best part is that I get to do a tutorial next semester for Honors. I'm in the process of making one with my Management professor and it will be based around her work in the Small Business Development Center. I'm really excited since her work is so interesting. Just so you know, a tutorial is a one -on- one class that meets once a week for an hour and can be based on anything we want to learn. We have to pick one in our major and then what ever is left we can choose any topic for.
Ok I'm headed for bed!
Goodnight Scranton!

Luck o' the college student

I have a confession to make: this will be my first Parade Day ever! I didn't go last year since my Habitat for Humanity trip left the morning of. This year we leave at 8:15 the next morning. I am so excited even though I checked the weather for Franklin, West Virginia and it's supposed to rain the wholeeee week! It's even supposed to snow there Thursday! I thought it was supposed to be warmer!! Next trip we are going to FL! It will still be fun though. I'm just whining. I have a list the size of my arm of what I need to pack and haven't started yet. Well, that will be Friday's job since all my classes got cancelled. (Refer back to the title ...I am so lucky. Be jealous!)
This is the month for birthdays. Sunday was my brother's. He turned 15. Today is my mom's. I think she'd rather I left out her age. I think they are starting to know me at the mail room with all I've been mailing out.
So yesterday we had a meeting about honors program tutorials. I'm honestly really excited. They are one on one classes. I get to pick the professor and the topic. We meet once a week for an hour and they count for 3 credits. Sweet deal! I have a few ideas about what I want to do but I won't spoil the surprise for you guys. The topic will definitely be in my major, management, though.
Well, that's about all! I just want to wish everyone a SAFE and fun Parade Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Spring break!!
Toodles!

Shovelin' my way through the Semester

The snow is really coming down outside now, but it's not unexpected. We haven't had snow in a little while here so we kind of deserve this. Maybe there won't be class tomorrow!! That would be sweet.
Well rugby started up again this week. We had practice Monday and today and a meeting Tuesday. I'll be honest I was sore after the first practice! Our "coach" Tim really loves making us do sprints. I think he gets a kick out of seeing the looks on our faces, but we do need the fitness. At the meeting there were a ton of new faces. It was really exciting. I feel like women's rugby is really starting to get the respect it deserves, especially since we went to playoffs last season. The school is even allowing us to wear purple now and legitimately be a Scranton team. We will still be a club team, though. There are big things in store for women's rugby, I can feel it!
The shoveling I'm talking about in the title is more metaphorical. I've been shoveling my way through classes! The snow may not be coming down heavily, but the homework sure is! We have these Journals we do in my honors science class. They are not your average "Dear Diary" journal. We need to take a position and defend an argument with research and then take some action to further our position. It is kind of interesting that we get to go into the community and try and make a visible change. I'm doing mine on peanut allergies and bans in schools. I'll let you know how it turns out. I also have a book discussion dinner with Fr. Pilarz as a part of the Honors program. The book is After This by Alice McDermott. So far the book is good. It is about a women's life post-WWII, but that is all I know so far.
As far as an ISP update, we are in full-steam-ahead meeting mode. I have 3 different meetings this week alone. I have one for my fundraising committee, one for the general group, and one with just my Guyana group. It's busy but it's good because I feel like with each meeting we are getting closer to the trip.
Ok well I need to get some food and head to practice!
Toodles!

Back in Action!

Oh how I've missed you, dear blog! It has been far too long.
Well Winter Break was started with a bang and ended with a fizzle. Let's just say I couldn't wait to get back. It was great to see friends from home and spend time with the Fam, but I really needed to get back into the swing of things here. On a fun note I took a bartending class! I can now make 12 drinks in 4:23 minutes! Eventually I would like to work as a bartender, but with all the things on my plate right now it will have to wait.
So what's being back at school like this semester? It's like being scooped up into a tornado of activity. Ya know how I said I was applying to go on an International Service Program trip? Well I got in and I'm going to Guyana!!!!!!!! (It's on the northern coast of South America.) I am going for 10 days in June, and this Friday I get to go on a retreat to meet all the people in the program, and in my group! This is such an exciting process, but I do have to earn my way by putting in time doing fundraising.
But that's not all... the first trip of the semester will actually be the Habitat for Humanity trip over Spring Break to Franklin, West Virginia. It will be most of the people that went last year and a few new faces so it should be a great time.
I started back up at Moses Taylor, but with my class load I'm just filling in. Those 3- 11:30 pm shifts are a little much to handle on a regular basis.
Speaking of class load, boy do I have a heavy one this semester. Accounting, Statistics, Art History: The Age of Rembrandt, Marketing, Management, and hardest of all Science of the Day, it's a writing intensive honors science. Hopefully I can keep my head above water but one thing is for sure: I will be very familiar with the library by May.
TTFN! I must go eat!
