Focus on the Nation

Every year Saint Leo, along with many other Universities, host an event called Focus on the Nation. Classes have alternate schedules so that students are able to partake in the presentations as well as watch other students and faculty present on issues regarding global warming, social issues etc. My Mass Media in Society class decided to do our part and put together a presentation for the event. We worked on the project regarding concerns in the area of Rwanda. We had to do this presentation in front of faculty, staff and students! Talk about nerve racking. I thought that I would for sure pass out in front of everyone. However I got through it and we received a lot of positive feedback! Our class did a great job getting the message out their about Rwanda as well as worked on our public speaking fears!!!
It was really nice to see how much support we were given by our peers and others.

ARRRR!

Each year my friends and my self wake up bright and early to go to down town Tampa to enjoy the Gasperilla day parade! Gasperilla is traditionally a celebration of when the pirates took over Tampa Bay! The parade consists of HUGE floats being steered by bead throwing pirates! It’s very similar to Mardi Gras with the exception of nudity and the addition of pirates! The pros. stated that the event attracts about half a million onlookers a year! One of the most fun parts about the parade is that many people dress up for it as well!

This year we actually decked out a shopping cart and made it into “The Black Pearl! Yes it still was a shopping cart with plywood, but use your imagination! It was fantastic; we put everything we could possibly need in it and more. Plus, it was perfect to stand on when trying to get beads! I can’t wait for the adventures of next year!
