Spring Fling

Spring Fling! Spring Fling is the time when Cab and Student Involvement work hard to bring bands and other novelties to campus. This semester, they brought Ever Clear and Florez to campus. They did a good job playing there music. The MC was the creator of Evolution of Dance. He told jokes and made everybody laugh. They also brought snow cones, kettle corn, custom made bands, and designed T-shirts. With the T-shirts and bands, you could have designed them with anything you wanted. My best friend got himself and his girl friend on the shirt. Cab also played bingo. With bingo, they give away prizes such as mp3 players, DVDs players and other cool prizes. This bingo on the other hand was different. Instead of giving away a few prizes, they gave away 25 prizes all of which added up to 3000 dollars. The grand prize was an X box 360!

Black History Month

This month is Black History Month. This week on the other hand, is the week that Kappa Alpha Psi, Progressive Black Men, S.I.S.T.U.H.S, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma hosted an expo and a yard show in honor of this month. The yard show was amazing. It showed unity among the Greeks and none Greek organizations. The Blood Buses were also out by the café taking blood and giving shirts, coupons and food in return. I got a T-shirt! Student Involvement is also doing something for this month. They are showed two movies. The movies are Taylor Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Women” and “A Women Called Moses.”

Many Activities!

Today is the day that the Leaders of Student Involvement interview people for the jobs of Orientation Leaders (OLs). This job is for people who want to help incoming freshman get used to the campus. Valentine’s Day is coming up soon and every single organization is doing something for it. The Greeks are doing candy grams while the people of S.E.R.V.E hand out coffee for their alternative spring break. They go to Louisiana, Brazil and Ecuador to help people in need, instead of going to the beach. CAB is having signups to the Orlando magic game. They are playing Detroit Pistons.

Going Greek

Every year in January, there is a week that is set aside for the Greeks on Campus. This week is called - you guessed it, Greek Week. This week is when everybody who is interested in Greek Life comes out and shows their interest in the Sororities and Frats on Campus. The entire Greeks on campus have these interest parties. At these parties you find out a little history and you get free food. After that is when they start to look at people to see what their personalities are like. If they think you are a good selection, they will send you a bid in the mail saying that they would like you to be a part of the Frat or Sorority.

I didn’t go Greek this semester because I wasn’t ready. On campus we have 3 Frats that do not really have to go by the bidding process I explained. These Frats are part of a predominately black Greek organization called the Divine Nine. These 3 are: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma. I have family in all of these organizations, and I felt pressured into going to one of them. I decided to wait until next spring to go Greek because I need to see for myself why I need to be in a Frat. If you do decide to go Greek, do it for you not anyone else.

Winter Formal

The week before Finals, CAB has a formal dance where you get all dressed up and go out. This year we went to Bush Gardens, and I took this girl name Bethany. The food was amazing. CAB hooked us up with fish; roast beef, potatoes and steak as our main course, and for dessert, there were many different types of cakes. CAB had strawberry, Chocolate and vanilla. The Dj was pretty good also. He played new songs from 2006-2008, and he brought back thriller at the end. He even played the Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide and the Electric Slide. The buses were comfortable. I went to sleep going to the dance and coming back from it. All in all it was a good night.

Pirate experience...

On November 15, we went to the Pirate dinner in Orlando. It was pretty good. For 5 dollars we got to take a nice bus, we had a nice meal and we sat down and watched people perform. When we got there, we had appetizers. The food was good. We had a choice of shrimp and roast beef or chicken and roast beef. The show was kind of funny. We got separated into groups and we were the yellow group. We represented SLU well.

Alpha's Halloween Party

During Halloween, the Greeks throw the best parties. The Alpha Party this semester was one of these types of parties that you just had to go to. Everybody and their mom was there; the old Alphas that graduated Saint Leo in 2000 were there, along with the other Greeks. Everyone was dancing and have a great time, next thing you know, this song comes on and everybody parted like Moses moving the Red sea. That’s when all the Divine Nine Greeks started doing their strolls. Their movements were matching every beat to the song. After that, everybody went back to dancing. Eventually, the party was over and we all headed out to get something to eat. After that long night, I was ready to go to bed.

Howl-o-Scream!

Today was Howl-o-Scream at Busch Gardens in Tampa. To me this one was a lot better than Halloween Horror nights. The scare zones were longer. The actors came out of the trees and trash cans just to scare you. The houses are so much scarier. In one of the houses, we had to walk through a small crawl space and while we were in this dark crawl space, the actors came out of nowhere and scared the crap out of people. I was in the group with the President of Student Government Union (SGU) Andre Curry. When he saw this, he ran all the way to the beginning and stopped. When we asked him why he stopped, he said and I quote, “There was a big black bird.? We all laughed at him. Today was one of the funniest days of my life.

Halloween Horror Nights

Hey,

Today was the day that we go to Halloween Horror nights, and tomorrow it’s Hollow Scream. It’s a tradition that happens every year. Campus Activities Board (CAB) and all the class officers came together and sell tickets. All together five (5) bus loads were taken, and we shipped out. On the bus ride, the bus driver turns on the music and everybody and their mom starts to sing. Going with your friends is even better. You get to see them get scared and when they get scared, they run as fast as they can to avoid being scared again. We spent about six (6) hours there and all we had to pay was 5 dollars. I thought it was well worth it.

Today is the Kappa Party. Kappas are a fraternity that is part of the Divine Nine. The party was good. Everybody and their family tree were at that party dancing and having a great time. They played all types of music like Rap, R and B, Reggae, and Reggaeton. During the Party, a song came on, and when this song comes on everyone stepped back and all of the Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities came out and did there strolls. It was cool to see the different types of strolls, and dance moves each of them did. At the end of the song, each of them did their calls and it was cool.

Coming to Leo...

Hey!

My name is Devan. But most people call me Dj. I prefer Dj. I’m a freshman here at Saint Leo University (SLU). When I got my acceptance letter, I can remember calling my admissions counselor and tell her I got in. Even though she already knew, I wanted to thank her for getting me in. When summer orientation came, I was excited. Acting like a “true? freshman, I got new clothes, shoes, and a fresh fade. The day arrived, and I drove down here. I wanted to be the first freshman on campus. I met everyone during our “Invitation to Orientation.? I was running for freshman vice president, so I made it my job to get to know everyone. After our meetings, we had a party at club Leo. Club Leo is where a lot of people, freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors come to dance. Even some of the Fraternities do their strolls and steps.

During the transition from summer to college, I was a nervous wreck. I was so excited to leave my home, my job and my stress from high school, but I didn’t want to leave my friends and family. School started on the 25th of August. I arrived on the 23rd. I wanted to get the best of everything, and I wanted to make fun of the people who were struggling to get their stuff in on the 25. My parents helped me move in of course. After I got moved in, and my parents left, I went downstairs and introduced myself to everyone. At SLU we have the best RAs. RAs or Resident Assistants are college students who monitor the dorm that you stay in. If you have a problem, see them about it. Student Chaplains are like counselors. If you have a serious problem, talk to them and they will try and help with the situation.

The transfer from your last summer is hard, but here at SLU, the staff makes it a lot easier to deal with. If you have any question, don’t be afraid to ask.
