Coffee Chaos: the Pursuit of Awakedness
Recently, I've begun to noticed that as the days until the end of the year get closer the amount of caffeine based beverages rises exponentially. It seems like the amount of coffee taken in by the average college student could probably fill up a swimming pool. For EACH student! That's a lot of coffee.
Don't get me wrong now. I might not be a huge fan of coffee, but I'm a big endorser of caffeine. Some days you just can't get by without it. Take last weekend for example: after volunteering at a concert here at the school for 8 hours and helping to tear down after the show I ended up not getting to bed until after 4am. What's worse is that that 3 hours later I got up to finish writing a paper for my class at 10am. If not for shots of energy drinks I don't think I would have made it.
There's just no substitute. In the past two days I have been awake 41 hours out of 48. If you want to get technical, 85% of the time over the last two days I have been awake. I would be even mildly conscious without caffeine!
I just made a coffee run with a friend to Dunkin' Donuts to pick up their $.50 iced coffees (which are apparently delicious by the way). She's just finished throwing back her second one and looking for thirds. And I don't blame her!
With the schedules we keep anything less than an unhealthy amount of caffeine in our diets would leave us falling into a comatose state during classes or being zombies. Though we are all kind of zombies anyway at this point.
I would hate to see the world run out of coffee. That would be a slow, boring, cranky and zombieesque world. Even if you don't like coffee there really is no denying that it really does make a huge difference. Especially for college students. America might run on Dunkin', but a cup of Joe is what makes the world go around.

James, I'm an old guy. Actually, at 62, I'm a young old guy. But still.
I live on the stuff. I'm an English tutor, and some days I would short-change my students with espresso. I drink one shot per each instructional hour. For example, two night I have a three hour session, and while I feel great right now, I just now that when 7 p.m. rolls around, I'll be ready for a Trippio or what-the-fuck-ever it's called at Starbucks.
Coffee (or, okay, its active ingredient) is a beautiful thing.
There IS a substitute, but I sincerely urge you to avoid it. If you need amphetamines, it really is better to flunk the class.
