Pictures from the Bonfire

Here are the pictures I promised from last weekend's bonfire/ hiking trip to the beach. First, here are Alice (she goes to Georgetown, a fellow Jesuit institution) and I. . . .

There are so many students here, including Alice who are trying to watch the March Madness College basketball games and they're on TV here at like 10 AM. Talk about a time difference!

This is a picture of the beach where we stayed, it's called Tai Long Wan:

There was a little restaurant connected to another beach nearby and that was the only place around for miles! Hong Kong has so much great hiking. Hovever, most of the trails are basically paved with concrete. So, it might not have that total "nature feel," but I"m not complaining.

This gives you an idea of our "two to three person" tents. I guess they were talking about dwarves . . ... because there was NO WAY two to three people were fitting.

Well, I'll send another blog your way after the weekend, right now I need to go study some Mandarin and International Business. I am glad I have been able to post so many entries, back home at SPC I am so busy with schoolwork, I never felt like I had enough time to blog!

Feel free to leave a comment on my blog if you wish.

St. Patty's Day. . . Bonfire on the Beach, just another week in HK!

I realized I never put a picture up of our Saint Patrick's day boat ride . . . . .so here it is! We pooled together our resources and rented a boat for four hours to sail around the Harbour on Saint Patty's day. Here I am with my fellow GREEN exchange students. On this day, everyone is Irish.

Here is a picture of the Hong Kong skyline from the boat. I think the light show was going on around this time. Each night at 8 pm there is a light show where the buildings light up . . . we had a great view from the boat.

The following week, Grace (Bottom, middle) called Jamie (top right) and I and Vin (bottom left) out to dinner to meet her friend from New York, Danny (bottom right). We enjoyed an AMAZING all you can eat dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Basically, they gave you a menu and you could order anything you wanted. I tried so many new things and I am now in love with Abalone. . . . but I had better not get used to it because I don't think I will be eating this kind of thing on a regular basis. It was so much fun to meet Danny and chat with my friends. Several hours later, we rolled home.

Last weekend, a group of 20 Exchange students and myself took a two hour ferry ride, then a short hike to a beautiful secluded beach for an overnight camping trip and bonfire. Two of the students needed to shoot a film for one of their classes. The film included a bonfire scene, so we did the real thing! It was so much fun, but the next day I had many hours of sleep to catch up on. My camera batteries went dead, but I will add a picture next week if I can find a good one from one of my fellow tent-campers. :)

I don't think I ever mentioned it, but I will be interning this summer at Deloitte in Minneapolis, MN. My internship starts the beginning of June, but I will go to Minneapolis earlier to find a place to live and such. I bought my plane ticket home for the 11th of May and my last final is April 30. So I still have a month and a half to enjoy!

Stop feeding the Feral Monkeys!

I will not attempt to mention EVERYTHING I have done since my last blog, but there are most definitely a few highlights. First of all, midterms are OVER! I was about to celebrate but soon realized, only a month until finals. . . . .I can't believe how the time flies. My midterms went very well though so I"m happy about that.

Last week I attended an "English Table" where many of the local students come to practice their English with native English speakers. The English table is held once a week. The conversation is always fun and the food is delicious! This week the Consulate General of the United States in Hong Kong and Macau (Mr. Cunningham) gave a short speech on "Sino-U.S. Relations." For some reason when important people are at the dinner the food is so much better!

Today (Saturday) my friend Crystal and I wandered around Hong Kong. It was so fun to have an outing with her, as neither one of us speak Cantonese or Mandarin very well so we are forced to learn quickly and use the few words we do know. Usually, I end up in a group of friends with at least one person who speaks a dialect of Chinese, but it's no fun to rely on others!

So, this morning we started out by taking train to Tsuen Wan in the New Territories. Of course we had to be well-nourished for the hiking we planned later in the day so we stopped at . . . a couple bakeries along the way. . . . . . mmmmmmm

Here is the Light Bus we took up to where our hiking trail started. . . .of course we asked for directions to the beginning of the trail from the info desk. He answered in Mandarin, and I understood! Okay, it took like 3 times but it was so much fun. I think I'm getting the hang of it. . . . . .

On the way we talked to some school children (through their English-speaking teacher) and they told us about the crazy monkeys that were on the trail where we were headed. They said not to eat anything in front of them, not to have anything green, and if they came up to us to walk away slowly. Here is the sign telling us to. . . well you can read it!

The trail took about an hour and a half. . . . Hong Kong is getting a little hot and humid, as we quickly discovered while clamoring up the mountainside.

At one point, we had to ask for directions, and a nice Chinese couple told us where to go, then offered us a ride! Well, we think they did. Ha ha. . . it's probably not a good idea to go with strangers, but what fun we had checking out the Monkeys during our scenic van ride. They were actually snarling at us at times, and weren't afraid of humans at all.

We were dropped off at the main road, and Crystal and I took a bus back to campus.. . . . It was so fun to try to use our newly acquired beginner language skills!

I realized I never put a picture of the Campus here on my blog, so here is a picture. . .

Tonight I need to get LOTS of stuff done. . . I should probably buy a plane ticket home too, that might be a good idea. I can't believe I still don't have one. Maybe I'll just say here :) On second thought, I can't wait to get back to SPC and share even more of my adventure stories!
