"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

just a quick note.
in my last blog, i stated my name, and then i noted that “I don't care how it's spelled, it's just a name." this, i see, took some of my fans by surprise. and perhaps requires further clarification. so here we go…

as my more devoted fans already know, i typically spell my name m-a-d-i. however, oftentimes i am the only one to spell it this way, and when others do spell my name m-a-d-i they frequently pronounce it strangely. fortunately, these spelling variations have never bothered me; i actually find them quite entertaining, in a completely unpatronizing way. (yes, i just made up a word- live with it.)

now, one might wonder why i say my name is not that important. to that wondering soul i would answer: yes, you are justified in your wondering. most people vehemently disagree; most people say a person’s name is the most important thing to remember.
i beg to differ: a name is no more than a label, an insignificant jumble of letters, an illusion of acquaintance if you will. a name has absolutely nothing to do with who a person really is – their essence. again, i state, “it's just a name."

first, for the purposes of this clarification and because you should know that i am always right, i will provide two situations; second, i will ask you one question about these situations; third, i will answer my question for you.

The Situations:
1. Take male person A – I will label him Bob.
You know Bob’s name: Bob.
2. Now take male person B - I will not label him.
You don’t know / can’t remember this man’s name… however, you've spent the last thirty three hours talking to him about his life. So you do know that he is a retired chemical engineer who likes computer games, building sandcastles, and writing lists on blue post-it notes; and he has a wife, one kid, and a (rather pointless) hamster.

The Question: In which case are you more correct in saying, “Yes, I know this guy."?

The Answer: case two.

…proving my point that names are insignificant.
in conclusion, you are hereby welcome to forget my name. perhaps even now, as you are reading this, you cannot recall that silly little jumble of letters known as my "name" and that is fine by me.

that is all.
