Pull your arm up, you look like an amputee.

So we had an AWESOME Saturday down in good old San Antonio. Had lunch at the Botanical Gardens, went to the pool for a while, got some of the best Tex-Mex in town, and then I headed off to a great performance of You Can't Take It With You. Prospective students take note, PLENTY of things to do around here. But we were fooling around the pool and decided to do "model" shots. My friend and I were sitting watching and she said we should act like judges on America's Next Top Model and she decided to be Janice Dickinson. As soon as the "shoot" started, she said "Pull your arm up, you look like an amputee." After only 2 shots, we had already lost it.

As good as the weekend was, the week around it was HEINOUS. It is that time of year. Where the projects pile up, the papers catch up, and the finals take over the school. Again to prospective students, don't let this turn you off from the school. You will be dealing with it wherever you go. Welcome to college. But I have been busy busy busy other than even school work.

You Can't Take It With You had a FANTASTIC opening, having one of the best non-musical opening night attendances in Trinity history. It is getting wonderful reviews from the audiences and we are having a blast on stage. To those interested, the 2008-2009 theater season has been chosen! In the following order, the shows are: Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by Bert V. Royal, Booth: A Play About Theater by Austin Pendleton, Icarus's Mother and Action by Sam Shepard, and The Misanthrope by Moliere. A very dramatic season, but it looks like it will be a good one!

Mozart's Requiem is coming up in a week for Choral Union! Then choir is out for the year. Should be a good concert, and we are also doing a Vaughan Williams piece, so try to come out if you can.

Momentum, Trinity's dance show, is hard at work in rehearsals. My dance is coming together very well and should be ready to go soon, although I must admit I'm getting very nervous. It's a bit kitchy (my fault) and I need to clean it up a bit.

Other than that all is well and I'm getting things together for the summer and beyond.

That is all!

So to speak...

I learned a little about the military this weekend. One of my best friends and suitemate is in ROTC and one of his ROTC friends, he, and I were hanging out and talking about... life... yeah... Anyway, I learned about some of the required etiquette in ROTC, one of which is related to use of language. Many phrases have some sexual connotation to them (container, rocket, etc.), some of which are a little ridiculous, but require you, when saying them, to follow it up with "so to speak." See, to me, that's just "That's what she said." with a fancy cover up. So whenever I can, I am going to say "so to speak" when I deem necessary. You should join in. We will start an epidemic. It will be the new "that's what she said" or "awkward turtle".

Been a busy past two weeks. Homework is starting to catch up with me and I am beginning to drop back, but I am getting everything done. I need a break every once in a while, some Smash Bros. or some simple hang out time, but I am doing alright.

I went to several people with my summer job issue for advice and came up with some good thoughts, but not much. I decided to take action and recontact all of my theaters to see if anything popped up. THANK GOD I DID. I have two offers to my name, one of which I am taking: Canterbury Summer Theatre in Michigan City, IN, where I worked last year. I will be Nick in Bedroom Farce, Laurie in Little Women, Billy Crocker in Anything Goes, and a performer in I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, maybe more (w00t!). Thank God this is all finally working out.

Choir is busy busy busy lately. Chamber Singers have a concert this Friday which seemed to have snuck up on us. I think we will be ready, but we need to pick up the pace a bit. Trinity Choir is working on Mozart's Requiem (LOVE IT) for the end of the month. Come to either if you can.

This weekend is Family Weekend down here at Trinity, which means it's time fooooooor Trinity Spotlight! Trinity Spotlight is our talent show at school, where whatever acts who wish to can compete for a cash prize. Last year the Trinitones won with "Hooked on a Feeling" (because we pretty much rock) and this year we are competing again with... well it's a surprise, hehe...

Next weekend is opening for You Can't Take It With You. Please come down if you can to see it because it is freakin' HILARIOUS. You will have a grand old time. April 18-26 (see Trinity's Drama webpage for details on times, etc.).

Can't think of anything else to add on to that, so carry on through thick and thin.

Mama Duck!

DUDE, TAIWAN ROCKS!!!!

I got back a few days ago from my 10 day trip in Taiwan and WOW what a trip. I had so much fun I can't even begin to explain. Jetlag was harsh (14 hour time difference for a 13 hour flight. Gross.), but once we got there we had a blast. Taipei City is amazing and I WANT TO GO BACK SO BAD! We also went to Kaohsiung, which was just as amazing with a beautiful beach view, although Kenting had an even better one where we actually could walk on the beach. Our recitals went very well and I think everyone got 10 times better by the end of the trip. PS AMAZING FOOD!!!! We would just walk down the street or market and try samples and just go "MMM" at everything! Good cheap shopping too. So Taiwan, you get my stamp of approval as a country worth visiting. I totally want to go back and hope to soon.

I guess I should explain my title. There were five of us with our voice teacher and everywhere we went it would just be a little line of people. We thus dubbed our teacher Mama Duck. As a result, we all got our own nicknames: Hungry Duck, Slow Duck, Loud Duck, Baby Duck, and me: Whatever Duck. Confused? I was the moral neutrality of the group and my most common response to anything going on or any decisions was "Whatever." Thus Whatever Duck.

Not much else new to report since coming back... Oh wait yes, I have news. I'M GOING ABROAD NEXT SEMESTER!!!!! That is right folks, I will be in London for the Fall at Syracuse University's Abroad Program for Drama. I am SO psyched about this.... except for the forms, but you know, gotta get ready somehow.

This has been a buuuuusy week. I am so exhausted... actually sick today, but truckin along.

Nothing else to report. Carry on.

"It's not nice to call someone ugly." "A sign of someone who's been called ugly one too many times."

..... Ummmmmm..... I don't remember the context of this one, but it's funny nonetheless!

Okaaaaaay, busy past few weeks. I went to MWTA and did VERY well! I got called back to 10 theaters and now am waiting to hear from them to see if I get any job offers. Cross your fingers for me!

Liaisons opened and closed and did EXTREMELY well. Many people have come up to us and said this is the best production they have seen at Trinity since being here, which is a HUGE complement, of course. I will miss it dearly, but now it's on to our next show, You Can't Take It With You! Come down to see this one in late April.

Classes have been reeeeally rough lately, unfortunately. Too much stuff due, not enough time to do it in. Eh, whatcha gonna do? I am currently working on a costume design for A Midsummer Night's Dream for my Costume Design class, which is actually pretty fun. When we get to sketching though, we will have some time issues. That has been the highlight of my classes so far, though.

Trinitones have a concert coming up in less than a month! Aah! If you are in San Antonio in early April, should come see us. Comment if you want some details on this concert.

I recently found a new addiction: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Dear God, someone help me... Seriously.

Well, that's about all for now. Did I forget anything? Hmmmmm.... Oh right, yeah, that little thing..... I LEAVE FOR TAIWAN IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!! I will be back after Spring Break and will let you all know what happens, but my Voice Studio trip starts soon! Wish me a happy trip and a bon voyage!

Later!

Can we have a picture of Mike walking into a giant vagina?

Caught your attention, didn't I? We are hard at work in rehearsals for Les Liaisons Dangereuses and at the end of a rehearsal our stage manager questioned us about T-shirt designs. A certain cast member (I'm not naming names) suggested Mike (our Valmont) walking into a giant vagina, at which point we lost it. Graphic, I know, but it pretty much sums up the whole play.

So first of all, I apologize for not being on the ball and keeping up with this blog. I've been a very bad/busy boy, so please forgive me.

As I said, we are hard at work to get Liaisons ready for opening night in... oh.... A WEEK. I'm a little frightened, but so far the show is going well. Mainly we need to cut down on time... because it is running at 2hr 45min. A bit much. I have faith though! We have a fantastic director and the cast is a blast, so all is well. After this is all over I'm free!.... until You Can't Take It With You! Well, I brought it on myself, didn't I?

Classes are fine. The end.

We had our Choir Tour a few weeks ago, where we took a four day trip across New Mexico singing at schools, churches, and the like. The singing went fine. The after-tour concert was PHENOMENAL. The trip was.... ehhhh. There's only so much you can take of people in a small space such as, oh, say, a bus for 18 hours at a time. But the trip was pretty successful overall.

Trinitones have been busy boys lately! We are learning a ton of new songs, including That Thing You Do, And So It Goes, Starlight, and a few more surprises for this year. We got to perform Hard To Say Goodbye at Mocha Life very nicely and then we had a few performances at Choir Tour. We have Spotlight auditions coming up (school talent competition), so wish us luck.

Soooo this weekend is pretty big for me. I have my audition at MWTA (Midwest Theatre Auditions), which is a large cattle call audition for summerstock theatre. About 60 theatres show up and through a minute and a half song and monologue audition, your summer plans are determined. I've been prepping, getting my headshots and resumes ready, practicing my pieces, getting some backups. I'M SO NERVOUS THOUGH. I went last year and did not so good because I got sick the morning of, which I do NOT want to happen again. Pray for me, cross your fingers, do whatever it takes. DON'T LET ME GET SICK. Oh, and wish me a broken leg.

That is all for now. Toodles.

If he cries one more time, his ass is grass.

I have a confession to make: I watch Project Runway. It's just so entertaining! I don't know the first thing about fashion or making clothes, but I love the drama and the final products and seeing who gets booted. If you know the show, you will get the title and the explanation. Otherwise skip to the next section.

I HATE RICKY. Will he stop crying for just one second?! My suite hates him too. My roommate actually at one point said, "If he cries one more time, his ass is grass." I laughed my own ass off at this because I COMPLETELY agree.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!

I turned 21 just today. God knows what that means will happen, but BIRTHDAY!!!

This past week was kind of a roller coaster. SOOOO busy with homework, which I got all done. At the same time I'm doing rehearsals for Liaisons, which are a blast and I know are going to get better. THEN I auditioned for You Can't Take It With You, which I originally wasn't going to do because I didn't want too busy of a semester. My roommate convinced me to do it and I actually got cast! I will be playing Wilbur C. Henderson, the IRS agent. Exciting!

Classes, although busy, are a lot of fun. I have a feeling this semester will be loaded, but with creative growth (sorry to get all euphonious on you).

PS If you come for nothing else, come see Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the set and costumes. Had my fitting the other day and it was AMAZING. Probably the best costume I will ever wear.

Choir Tour to New Mexico is next weekend, which should be a blast. It's a great group of kids and should be a lot of fun.

If you came to Trinity in Focus, I hope you enjoyed the weekend and that you got to see the Broadway Revue. If you are coming up again, check to see if a production is showing!

I don’t know where I’m supposed to start and I feel like I’ve already lost. I’m the Purple Parrots on Legends of the Hidden Temple.

This was my favorite quote from the Broadway Revue. It pretty much speaks for itself.

The Revue took place this weekend during Trinity in Focus. Overall I felt the show went over quite well. I was very happy with what I wrote (in case you didn't know, I was the writer for the show). I've been stressing out over this thing for ages, but now I am FREEEEE!!!

First week back! I've had a pretty good first three days, too. My schedule is a little odd this semester because I have almost all my academic classes on Tuesday/Thursday, leaving my Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays open. I am starting Voice this semester with one of the best vocalists and vocal coaches. Choir is getting ready for the New Mexico tour in February soon. My other classes this semester are Costume Design, Advanced Production Techniques: Computer-Aided Design, Contemporary Literature, and Shakespeare's Tragedies. As I said before, so far so good!

We start rehearsals for Les Liaisons Dangereuses next week, where I will be playing Azolan. It's a nice little role that will give me time outside of the theater, so I'm pretty excited. We also have You Can't Take It With You auditions coming up and some student-directed pieces will happen soon, including Tick Tick Boom, Man Talk (student-written), and more.

Mocha Life will be coming up in February and the Trinitones, among other groups, are performing. We will have other performances soon, including our Happy Friday performances (every Friday around lunch we perform in Coates. It attracts quite a crowd!).

I have summerstock auditions coming up in a month, so I need to get monologues and songs prepped if I want a summer job!

Oh, and PS, I'M 21 IN A WEEK!!!!

That is all.

Trial by stone!

I just saw The Dark Crystal for the first time. Okay, I'm sorry to those of you who are lovers, but what? What a messed up flick! Those puppets were frickin scary, man! I was shocked it was supposed to be a family movie because I found myself cringing or jumping at things. Even the little pillbug with fur gave me a heart attack when it jumped out of the log with that Pit of Sarlacc for a mouth. Aaaaaanyway though, at one point the Skekses (bad guys) are arguing with one another over who should be the new emperor, and eventually two of them stare each other down and then scream "TRIAL BY STOOOOOONE!!!!" And they all repeat it and, forgive me, but it might have been one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I laughed my ass off. Ahhh, the puppet drama...

So I haven't been too good about keeping up with my blog lately. Apologies to all. This break has been completely necessary and very relaxing, although the semester turned out to be my best, which is shocking because it has also been my most stressful. That aside, it was definitely a GPA booster and pretty fun. Mostly been hanging around the house or out with friends seeing movies and the like.

Oh, and may I just say, hasn't this been a good holiday for movies? Wow. Juno and Sweeney Todd, right up at the top for me. Enchanted was cute too and I still need to see Atonement, but I think this has been a pretty good box office season.

I've also been revising the script for the Broadway Revue. I had to do it just recently because one of our actors is ill and had to drop out, unfortunately. Thus I had to write a character out of the show, which turned out to be a lot easier than I imagined it would be.

I've been my big geeky self and playing Dungeons and Dragons with my fellow geek friends at home. My battle sorcerer rocks though! You... you can relate, right? No? Not so much? Yeah, ok...

Ooh, go play Rock Band. Dude, that game totally (no pun intended) rocks! You have a microphone, guitar, and drums and you just do this Karaoke Revolution/Guitar Hero/drum game combination game! So much fun! I don't own it unfortunately, but it's awesome nonetheless.

I got some nice Christmas presents, some DVD's, some Wii games, lots of clothes, nothing worth throwing out. It's so interesting to me that the days leading up to Christmas Day used to tear me to pieces waiting for the day when I could rip open some presents. Now it's Christmas Eve and I'm thinking "Huh...... Got that present thing to do tomorrow...." How about that?

Went to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra? Oh yes, that was me. Dude, I know I've seen them before, but WOOOOHOOOOOHOOOWWW!!! So much fun! The lights and the music and..... aarrrrgh. So good.

My family and I took a short vacation in Wimberley, a small town just outside of San Marcos. We used to own a river house there, so we stayed in a bed and breakfast nearby our old house. It was the most relaxing experience. Granted I was playing Metroid and Super Mario Galaxy for most of it, but it was just what I needed. If you are ever there over the holidays, go see the Trail of Lights. Magical.

I got to see my high school friends on New Year's Eve! I don't get to actually see them very often except for those who I keep up with and are my closest friends. It was so good to see everyone and see who changed and who didn't change and all that jazz. That's something that's worth doing after you graduate.

Well, semester starts back up soon. We've got Broadway Revue to put up, Les Liaisons to get ready for, a choir tour in New Mexico, ADAM PASCAL IS COMING TO TRINITY... should be pretty awesome!

I am the glowstick!

I was hanging out with my suitemates, Jordan and Austin (two of my best friends), at Crabby Jack's with some friends. There was a DJ that night and one of the guys there started jamming out and air raving. His friend said, "Hey, where are your glowsticks?" He replied, "I am the glowstick!"

So this week has been actually pretty mellow. I recently got a confirmation letter for Midwest Theatre Auditions, which is a big summerstock cattle call audition in February. About 50 theaters show, so it's a great summer opportunity for any theatre kids.

It's finals week. Hooray. I have had 2 finals thus far and have one tomorrow as well. My first was in Verse Drama, where I did a mock audition using only verse pieces, which I felt went fine. I had Microeconomics on Thursday which went ehhhhhhh. And tomorrow I have my final in Music Cultures, which we will have to wait for to see how I feel. Not too bad of a finals period though.

The Trinitones just did their second recording this weekend. We sang a few Christmas songs as well as a few favorites, recorded them in the choir room, and put them on a CD. It took a while, but it went well and the recording was good... except for the fact that we sound like we are in an Italian cathedral... which would normally be a good thing, but male a cappella music is a little odd in a cathedral. Here are a few pictures from the recording (with my rockin' new camera!).

Oooooother than that everything is going well. I head home for Christmas tomorrow, but I'll still be writing blogs. Keep a readin'.

Wanna get sharp on the roof later?

So I've decided to write my favorite quote of the week for my titles from now on. Don't worry. I'll explain too. It's not a funny inside joke for me to enjoy while I laugh at people's pitiful attempts to understand it.

My choir director Smac just recently had surgery and has been out. He recently came back and has been on some painkillers, so at the first few rehearsals he was a liiiiittle loopy. At one Chamber Singers rehearsal, he was more out of sorts than usual, and made a comment about a section being sharp, only he jumbled what he was saying. Subsequent comments included: "You feeling a little sharp there Smac?" "I'm a feeling a little sharp." "Hey Smac, wanna get sharp on the roof later?" There's my funny moment for the week.

I have had quite the busy week. I had my audition for Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Wednesday, where I did two monologues, Edmund from King Lear and Frank from Mrs. Warren's Profession. I was fortunate enough to be called back that Saturday to read for Danceny and Azolan. The cast list was posted on Sunday and I got cast as Azolan! If you don't know the story, he is the valet of the main character, Valmont (if anyone has seen Cruel Intentions, which many people don't realize is a modern adaptation of Liaisons, I am the Joshua Jackson character) I am very excited about this show and the cast itself is going to be a ton of fun (another blogger, Madi, got cast as Cecile!). If you are interested in seeing a Trinity show, Les Liaisons Dangereuses runs February 29-March 8. You can go to the Trinity drama website for details.

If anyone doesn't know, the Broadway Revue is a big event here at Trinity. It is a student produced, directed, etc. show with an original script written around Broadway numbers and put on in the big theater, the Stieren. This year I wrote the script for the show and on Saturday, the cast got to read through the full show, which took two months to complete (and is a whopping 46 pages long, to my dismay, as this means more editing for me). It was well received by the cast, thank God, and hopefully our audiences will love it just as much. The show will be January 18-20, which is a Trinity in Focus weekend, so please try to come to this too!

This past week for choir kids is what has been commonly referred to as Hell Week. It is the week before finals begin where we have rehearsals every night leading up to the Christmas Concert at the end of the week, which is fun but requires a lot of work, obviously. The concert went well, however, and as always got a huge crowd. We sang some great pieces and got to work with the full orchestra, which is always fun.

However what I really looked forward to was the Vespers Service on Sunday night. This is a separate Christmas concert that is different from the former because the service is more spiritual and there is no orchestra. In addition, the Christmas Concert takes place in Laurie Auditorium, our biggest venue on campus, while Vespers is in the Chapel. It is a beautiful service and many alums say it is one of the most memorable events from their career at Trinity. I actually had a solo, We Three Kings, which I felt good about. After the service the professors' houses along Oakmont hold open houses for students, parents, faculty, and all. Chamber Singers carols every year along Oakmont, which is always fun, and I got the extra pleasure of caroling with the Trinitones, which I have started to learn has become a prominent and popular group on campus!

Trinitones actually has a couple of gigs coming up, including a recording, a retirement home gig, and a few other performances. Trinity Choir and Chamber Singers is done for the year though. I'm really excited because next semester we are doing Mozart's Requiem! We are also going on tour in New Mexico, which will be a blast.

Tomorrow I have my last class in Directing and my final in Verse Drama, which consists of a mock audition with two verse monologues (I'm doing Edmund from King Lear and Acaste from The Misanthrope). Wish me broken legs! I also have my Microeconomics final on Thursday and Music Cultures final a week from tomorrow, and then I'm done!

As of now, I'm just winding down for the week of classes to end before Reading Days start on Wednesday. Unfortunately most of my final days will be spent doing things other than actual finals, but at least I have some things to do. Until then, I'm gonna keep chuggin' along.

Howdy!

Hi everyone!

My name is Mark. I'm a 20 year old junior from Houston, TX studying Drama here at Trinity. I someday hope to become a stage actor, but would like to get some screen acting experience as well.

I am a bit of a musical theater freak, having been engulfed in it from birth. My older brother played Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when I was 4 and since then it's just been my thing. I actually got to play Joseph last year in a summerstock theater (karma!). However, if you quiz me about a musical, I will probably know more than any living breathing human will ever need to know about it in his or her lifetime.

I am a complete geek in other ways as well. I love my Wii. I can't live without my Wii. Whenever I must live without my Wii, I turn to my XBox to keep me company. I am, admittedly, a Dungeons and Dragons geek as well. Don't worry, I'm in rehab. I'll be alright.

I love Maroon 5, The Beatles, Matchbox 20, Queen, the list never ends. I have way too many favorite movies to list, but some highlights are Little Miss Sunshine, Donnie Darko, Young Frankenstein, Fargo, Grindhouse, Monty Python... ooh, too long already. Here's the deal, if it has zombies, muppets, has anything to do with Mel Brooks, or is a 90's Disney animated musical, I'll love it.

I watch way too much TV. My grades, fortunately, have not yet been affected. If I had a nickel for each episode of Law and Order I've seen, I could pay off my student loans. I also love Friends, Will and Grace, Family Guy (can't get enough), Project Runway, and any cartoon or Nickelodeon show that was made in the 90's. I apparently have a thing for the 90's.

Shockingly, considering the list above, I read too. David Sedaris is wonderful, a study should be done to revive Kurt Vonnegut, and William Shakespeare is my god. I also love the Harry Potter series and The Golden Compass series and all that good geeky stuff.

Most of my time at Trinity has been spent in the Stieren Theater (a little joke for Drama majors is that we actually live there). Theater has been an integral part of my life ever since I was little. Performing on stage gives me a rush like none other and getting to study the art so in depth has been the most rewarding part of my experience at Trinity. Not only have I improved my skills on stage, but I have discovered skills and interests I never knew existed before with set and costume design, directing, set construction, and theater history, among others.

I am very fortunate to have been cast in several fantastic roles, both in and out of Trinity. I have gotten to do plenty of student-directed lab shows, which gave me a great head start in the Drama program. I also played a Sailor in Anything Goes, Paris in Romeo and Juliet, and (my favorite thus far) Benny Southstreet in Guys and Dolls, all on the mainstage here at Trinity.

I mentioned before playing Joseph at a summerstock theater. My summerstock jobs have all been landed thanks to the funding and help of the Drama department and have allowed me to have the best summer experiences I could have ever asked for. This summer, I worked at a theater in Michigan City, IN and got to perform as Will Parker in Oklahoma!, Dickon in The Secret Garden, Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore, and Bobby Child in Crazy for You. In addition I was asked to choreograph H.M.S. Pinafore and Crazy for You. I find myself lucky to have worked on such wonderful shows outside of the university when it was the university itself that made the experience possible.

I am also involved in choir at Trinity. Specifically I sing Tenor in Trinity Choir, which is our large co-ed ensemble, and Chamber Singers, a much smaller choir. Our conductor, Scott MacPherson (or Smac, as everyone calls him) provides a good mix of music, ranging from Renaissance era to James Taylor. In addition, I am a member of the Trinitones, Trinity's award-winning eight-person male a cappella group. We have become quite popular on and off campus and sing anything from solemn hymns to well known hits complete with beatboxing! I have always been passionate about singing so I am very fortunate to be able to continue what I love.

The First-Time Offenders is a comedy troupe on campus and one of Trinity's newest groups, having been established just last year, so I am proud to say I am one of the few original members still here. We perform Comedy Festivals on campus for study breaks or just for fun, including improv games, skits, and film clips all done by us. I am proud to say I am currently the Doo-Rap champion.

I am currently taking 16 hours, which is about the average semester load here. After this semester I will have completed my Common Curriculum, which is the required workload outside of your major for graduation. I hope to study abroad my senior year in England or even somewhere in the US.

As of now, we closed Guys and Dolls the week before Thanksgiving, which had an extremely successful run! I will be auditioning for Les Liaisons Dangereuses this week, which I am very nervous about (wish me broken legs). This is also my hell week because the Christmas Concert is this weekend, meaning this week will be stuffed with glorious choir rehearsals the week before finals. Such is the life I guess.

I will make sure to keep up with my updates and continue to spill on my life. If anyone has questions about Trinity, the Drama program, or me, please feel free to post a comment!
