Another new semester...

I do believe I have the most relaxed schedule.
Since my classes don’t start until 11:30, I have all morning to go to the gym and study. Of course, the study time gets shorter and shorter everyday while I deliberate over what to wear. I can’t seem to strike a balance…Agonize over an outfit or study? Truly, how much time does each deserve? I used to just copy Nancy and look through the news and study in the mornings, but now that she’s not here I find it harder to concentrate. I think it’s because I’m not trying to impress anyone anymore with my studiousness.

Then, after class, I report to work. Work is always a pleasant place. Just today, after my American Revolution and Spanish Literature classes, I got a piece of cream cake. I felt rewarded for all my diligent note-taking. I guess I have picked a most convenient work time – right when Tony starts his break in the break room (a wonderful little room that’s like a breakfast and dessert bar). It only made sense that I meet him in the break room – I can’t just wait in his office. What if we’re needed promptly? I’m only thinking of efficiency.

Yes, I am one to talk of efficiency, when I haven’t updated in years, but it is Nancy’s fault. Well, not all her fault. In addition to being mired down in untold number of books (for my classes), I have had to write her daily. I’ve had to tell her all my funny little stories and updates on all of her favorite people wandering around campus and who said what to whom, etc. She can’t stand not being privy to all the gossip around here. True, I mostly make it up, but it does take time (it is difficult conjuring interesting stories about a very academic campus) and I fall asleep at eleven. Really, I fall asleep. I watch the clock turn from 10:59 to 11:00 and I turn off the light, drop my book, throw off my glasses and am asleep. Before, with Nancy in the room, the lights went out a bit later, closer to twelve, which is still incredibly early in college time. I had a group meeting just the other day that lasted until 9pm and they didn’t understand my qualms about being out and about so late. Apparently, they call it quits at 3am. Well, if that works for you…

What else to mention? Of course! The inauguration! How amazing. Trinity had its flat screen in Java City (in the library) and in Coates, as well as a few other places, all broadcasting the inauguration. On my way to class at that point, I passed by both areas and there were crowds there watching. Much to my delight, in class, our professor had set it up on the projector so we watched the rest of it as if it were a movie. I’ve never known such a collective pride before.

Historical events aside, not too much has changed. The weather is still as indecisive as I am – one minute I can wear a skirt, the next I’m so cold I need my polar bear jacket. Oh, San Antonio…Actually, I neglected to mention a big change – classes! I signed up for 18 hours and then thought, “Good God, what am I thinking? so I have my usual 15 hours, only this time they’re all upper-division classes. No common curriculum for me this semester…I am taking History of Theatre: Classical-1642, Modern Brazil, US Diplomatic History, American Revolution, and Spanish Literature. All reading, all the time. There was one time when I thought that there would be nothing more perfect. Oh yes, but that was when I was attempting to minor in Mathematics and the numbers that became letters that represented 3D objects were driving me crazy. It does good to bring things into perspective. Definitely, what I have going on right now is preferable…a few hundred pages a week. You know, I would do that anyway so it might as well be educational.

Done with the pep talk, now I can do it! I can plow through the movements of the Massachusetts Bay Colony provincials. Oh, but how I wish it were slightly more fun…
