Derrick Chery

My Name is Derrick Chery. I was born and raised in Malden, Ma. for 16 years. I attended Malden high for 2 years then transfered to the suburbs of Canton to finish high school. It turned out to be a great move as I met different people which in return expanded my horizon. I played football all throughout high school becoming a captain my Senior Year. I was also on the basketball team for 3 years before injuring myself in the Thanksgiving football game forcing myself to be sidelined for my senior year of basketball.

After I graduated I attended Dean College for one year living on campus because my grades were not great to get into a better school. However it was a great experience because it woke me up because at that point i decided I really wanted to do something with my life. I studied hard and managed a 3.3 GPA, something I have never done before, which game me the opportunity to transfer to Wentworth.

Attending Wentworth was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I cleaned up my act, studied hard in school, and above all I was surrounded by individuals who wanted not only be successful in life but to be a valued member of the community! I joined the National S ociety of Black Engineers my junior Year and it was a tremendous experience. The group taught me teamwork, leadership skills, networking skills, career development, and more then that I met inspiring minorities such as my self to persevere in life no matter what. I became a basketball coach for the past 2 years as the 8th grade travel team head coach. I participated in numerous community service events hosted by NSBE, and even went off on my† own and participated in The Walk for Hunger this past May 07'.†

After all that I became the President of the Wentworth Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Thus far, it has opened many opportunities for me and I am ecstatic for this upcoming year. Looking back however, many people would probably never of thought I would have accomplished so much but, what I have learned through out the years and from my many of the falculty members are these four traits; Honesty, Energy, Economy, and System. Those four traits is what has allowed me to be in the position I am.
