Well as much as I said that summer was boring compared to school time, I miss it already! I came down two weeks before everyone else this year for RA Training – a really awesome experience. The best thing was that it wasn’t all “RA policy and procedure” stuff, we did a lot of fun and exciting things during those two weeks! For one of our team building exercises, we had to come up with a skit within our team and present it at the talent show. For our team, we wrote our own lyrics to Asher Roth’s “I Love College,” changing the name of the song to “I Love Res Life.” We even had a whole choreographed “dance” that our team performed while two of us sang. We definitely should have won…but we were robbed and finished second haha! A few days later, we went to Villanova’s ropes course and did a bunch of team building activities there. The last challenge was getting everyone on our team up and over this 12-15 foot wall. The hardest thing about that was that we could only have two people on top of the wall helping to pull up, and each person could only help twice.

Anyway, I’m back into the swing of things again. School has been back in session for about a month now. I’ve been extremely busy so far, with working as an RA, an assistant at the SBDC, a tour guide in admissions, in the pep band and wind ensemble among other things…and oh yeah, I have classes, too! Yeah life for me is busy at Widener, but it is so worth it. I love the experiences I’m going through and I learn something new everyday. My residents are keeping me busy as well…I’ve had some interesting things happen on my floor so far, but nothing I couldn’t handle! I’ve been thinking about different programs I can do with my floor, and I think the next thing I’ll be doing will be the Newly-Roomed Game – modeled off of the classic game show the Newlywed Game… so I’ll be sure to post about that and how it goes over next time. Til then, have fun!

Well the summer is just about half over for me already! It seems like it flew by in a lot of ways.

The cool thing is I already have one year under my belt now and I am officially a sophomore! My first year was awesome at Widener and, honestly, I’m excited to go back next year (after an enjoyable summer of course).

It’s somewhat strange when you first come home from college because you get accustomed to constantly being on your own and always having something (usually school work) to do. Now that I am home, I have no more school work to worry about and my friends aren’t right next door anymore. After a few days of being home and having next to nothing to do, I started CLEANING things! Haha, I guess I got so used to being busy that I was searching for things to do. However, that kind of died off after about a month and I started finding much more fun ways to spend my time. Of course, much of my summer has been spent in the pool or outside in this great summer weather!

Just about a month ago, I took a cruise to the Bahamas! I absolutely love cruises – this was the fourth one I’ve taken! I really had a great time and I ate some of the finest cuisine there is for 7 days (one of the best parts of the trip!!). We left out of Baltimore, Maryland, so it was a bit of a drive for us, but it was well worth it!

I took about a 100 pictures (I’m a photo-a-holic when I go on vacation), but I only included a few of them. Be sure to check some of them out, and I hope everyone else has a great summer!

The view during the trip out. As you can see the weather wasn't really that nice at first.

The housekeeping staff always makes cool towel animals when you leave for dinner!

Here's another one ^^^

The weather was much nicer on this day, and the view was absolutely fantastic. It's amazing when you are out on the ocean and all you can see is water all around...it really reminds you how awesome our world is.

This one was taken when we pulled into the Grand Bahama Island.

From this view you can see the Town Center of the island.

This is part of Atlantis Resort at Paradise Island.

Here's another picture from the Atlantis. This one is from the man-made beach outside of the hotels.

This was taken in Freeport on the edge of a beach that we ended up at.

This wasn't our ship, but I thought it looked really neat. It was docked next to us in the Bahamas.

Here's an up-close picture of the front of our ship. You can see the bridge in this picture (where the captain and his crew are).

I challenge you to find water this clear in the U.S.!!!

And finally, here's a nice pic of the water against the sunset on our way back to Baltimore...

      Hello again!

Well school is out now but I figured I should update about how the Dance for Danny went. It turned out great! We provided many different types of entertainment for the night, including a Dance-a-thon, a Dance-off, video games (classic N64 as well as Wii), poker tables, and (a college student’s favorite) FOOD! Everybody had a blast, especially Danny! All money raised at the event was donated to Danny G. and his family to help him afford his medical bills as he continues his battle with cancer. I was so happy to see how generous and charitable people can be – we even had professors turn out for the event and the donations continued to come in even a week after the event!

We, the freshmen members of the PSC, organized the event along with the help of a great supporting cast that included University professors, Deans, and many school organizations! It couldn’t have happened without all of the help during the process.

      Hey everyone,

It's been a little while since I blogged last. I had kept reminding myself to write again but school has been busy. Trust me, you really cherish that downtime when you get it!

A few weeks ago we hosted a PSC recruitment dinner for all of the incoming freshmen who applied to be in the Presidential Service Corp. It was interesting to talk to many current high school seniors and hear their outlooks on college - I remember being just as anxious and nervous as them just a few months ago! I was asked many questions about life at Widener, the classes, etc. and I enjoyed answering them. I know that I wish a current student had been there to answer all of my questions and quell my fears during that stage of high school, but I turned out just fine.

Last weekend, Widener hosted a benefit rock concert to raise money for the Susan G. Kohmen for the Cure Foundation ( for breast cancer). I helped out as a volunteer and can proudly say that we raised over $400 for the cause! The concert was definitely entertaining as well...check out some of the pics!

Hey all! So it’s been a while since I last blogged…things have been busy for me this semester, especially with applying to be a Resident Assistant. An RA is a person who is trained to help out residents with any problems regarding rooming and living in the dorms and also help to build community among the residents. I had wanted to be an RA ever since I came to college, and so far the process has gone well. I was offered a final interview and presented today and felt that it went very well! But despite all of the work that I’ve had this semester, I’ve still been able to have a lot of fun!

About two weeks ago, we had enough snowfall to have a snowball fight on our quad! It was pretty intense and lasted for an hour! What started as an every-man-for-himself battle turned into a quad-versus-the football-players-event after some members of the team showed up looking for a snowball war. But even with good competition, we successfully defended our quad to shouts of “This is Thayer!!? (our dorm name). Like I said – pretty intense! Everyone stayed up pretty late that night because we expected a cancellation or delay the next morning. Man were we surprised (and tired) the next morning to find that the snow had been cleared! I have some pictures of what the snowfall looked like around campus, too.

Another cool thing that we did with the PSC was that we went bowling as a group to one of the nearby lanes. Even President Harris came with us and bowled in one of the groups! I always see Dr. Harris around campus – he makes sure that he interacts with the students and stays in touch with them. Bowling was a lot of fun (even though I’m not much of bowler); it was really cool to go somewhere as a group and just hang out.

Well I hope to blog again sooner this time, probably in a week or so. I also plan on taking more pictures around campus so that everyone can put a picture to what I’m talking about. By the way, if anyone has any questions for me, comments about the blog, or advice for what you would like me to discuss, feel free to leave a comment and I will consider it!

Well as my title suggests, this will be the first time I’ve ever blogged before. I was really honored when asked to do a blog for the Widener Website being only a freshman, and I knew that many people who are seniors in high school and deciding where to attend college would be reading this – I know that I read students’ blogs when I was applying. For those reasons, I hope to provide all of my readers with good insight on what it is like to go to Widener.

At first, the transition into college was a little tough. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced, as it is for many other people. Moving into a foreign territory and sharing a room with a stranger is very weird at first, but at some point you realize that everyone else is going through the same experience as you. In my first few days I met at least 100 people that I had never spoken to before in my life and friendships began sprouting like wildfire. This was completely different from high school! For me, living in a new area wasn’t the hardest difficulty to overcome – it was adjusting to a new way of life – and that happens no matter what school you go to.

The awkwardness subsided after about a week for me, especially after I had walked around the campus a few times and began to familiarize myself with the area. It was also easier to get settled in once classes began. Actually having something to do frees your mind from thinking about the change that you are undergoing. Before you know it, you start calling your dorm room “home,? hanging out with your new friends as if they were your buddies forever, and thanking yourself for choosing the school that you did. But even though I’ve gotten so used to living here, there’s still no place like home.

So my first semester went extremely well – I earned a 4.0, landing me on the Dean’s List for the semester! I have to say that I found it easier to concentrate on work at college than it had been in high school. Your future seems so much closer and more realistic than that vision you had back in high school. Now school is back in session for spring 2009 and I hope to continue what I have been doing thus far. I will be writing again soon to update and continue to give others a glimpse of what life is like here at Widener.
